May 31, 2024
Dr. Michael Cohen comes to us from Washington state, where he ran his own successful practice. While he enjoyed 10 years on the West Coast, he is excited to move back to the East and be closer to family.
Dr. Cohen is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in plastic surgery of the breast and body. He is known for his artistic eye, his perfectionism, his emphasis on ethics and patient safety, as well as his ability to think outside the box when approaching clinical challenges.
His interest in plastic surgery sparked during his time at Washington University School of Medicine and his commitment to advancing his skills in plastic surgery led him to undertake specialized fellowships. He designed his own curriculum to delve deeper into plastic surgery research, securing prestigious fellowships from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. He became the first medical student in the U.S. to do both fellowships, following which he spent two years doing plastic surgery research under the mentorship of experts like Dr. Keith E. Brandt.
After completing medical school, Dr. Cohen also trained in plastic surgery at Georgetown University. During his residency, he co-authored numerous publications in plastic surgery. He also completed an additional year of subspecialty fellowship at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore with Dr. Bernard Chang, one of the pioneers in microsurgical breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
Dr. Cohen enjoys playing the acoustic 12-string guitar, and his interests span art and nature photography to outdoor pursuits like hiking and travel. He has traveled the globe, from living in Russia, Italy, and Israel to extensive travels throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and Asia, including Thailand and India. He also dedicates his time to surgical mission trips in the Dominican Republic and has either lived in or traveled to 47 states in the U.S.
Welcome to the team, Dr. Cohen! 🌟
